During work on the Deurganck Dock in Doel (Antwerp), two medieval trading vessels had been unearthed. The Flemish Institute of Cultural Heritage asked Sien to carry out a feasibility study for a museum devoted to the Cog Ships.
The study broadly examined two quesions: what is the global story (the Hanseatic league, medieval trading routes, developments in maritime technology…), and what is the local story (what exactly were the cogs doing in Antwerp and how did they sink)? What specifications must the museum building meet in order to display these unique ships? What iconography exists to depict the local story? And in which town would it be best to locate the Cog Museum?
